Global epidemic
Heart disease: It is important to have general understanding about
the heart organ as heart disease is causing more deaths than any-other disease
in the entire world. There are several heart diseases although Coronary
arteries heart disease is the biggest killer. One can see from the image on the
top left of the page how the arteries run over the organ. These arteries supply
blood to the heart to keep the organ healthy. A healthy heart takes oxygen
ridden blood from the lungs and circulates throughout the body first through
main arteries and then through small capillaries which feed every cell of the
body. Once the blood gets dirty it travels back to the lungs through veins
(blue colour vessels) and gets cleaned with the supply of oxygen which we
breathe. This circle of blood supply continues throughout life with double
action of the heart. The heart has double action which we can feel all the time
as heart beats. It is also important to have healthy lungs to support the
heart. We shall talk later about the lungs.
Heart action: Systolic action of the organ is when the heart
contracts and sends blood through the arteries to the whole body. The blood
pressure of the arteries in that position is average 120 in healthy persons.
(Top reading of the machine). A BP count of between (120-140) is classed
as raised BP although not too serious. If the BP is higher than 140, it is
concluded that one is suffering from hypertension. It is therefore important to
keep the high blood pressure under control because constant high reading can
lead to stroke or heart failure. The high blood pressure is usually due to
blocked arteries with plaque. The plaque is formed with high cholesterol. It is
important therefore to keep
your cholesterol
levels regularly checked and change your lifestyle, eating and drinking right
food and doing regular exercise. One must avoid anxiety and stress which can
also cause high blood pressure in many patients. High blood pressure can relate
to kidney disease also which needs to be diagnosed properly. In the elderly
people arteries can lose their flexibility and become hard which may also be
the reason of High blood pressure. Again change of life style can be preventative.
Diastolic action: of the heart is when the organ is at rest.
The BP normal reading in this state is 80 or below. The reading of pressure
above 90 is a cause for concern. Now-a-days many people have a BP machine at
home which is a good idea especially if you are suffering from the disease.
Heart
diseases: There are number of heart diseases, each disease has its
own origin.
Ischemic heart
disease: (Angina) is caused by narrowing
of the coronary arteries which supply blood to the muscle of the organ to keep
the heart healthy. The part or full blockage is caused by the plaque thereby
reducing the supply of the blood. The plaque may block one of the arteries, two
of the arteries or all the 3 arteries. If all the 3 arteries are blocked then
by-pass operation is necessary. On the other-hand if one or two arteries are
blocked the surgeon may open them up and install stent in them. The stent is a
tube made up of special metal mesh or of fibre. The Surgeon uses colour dye to
show the blocked arteries. The procedure is called angiography. Once the
blocked areas are confirmed, he will then make a small hole in the blood vessel
in the groin, armpit or the neck to insert a fine flexible wire called
catheter. On the front end of the catheter a small deflated balloon is attached
and the stent is put on around the balloon. The surgeon takes the catheter to
the blocked area and inflates the balloon which pushes the plaque to make room
for the blood to go through. He deflates the balloon and pulls the catheter
out. In time the cells around the stent form a natural blood vessel and may
last whole life of the patient. Some-times an infection may start in the place
of the stent which is treated with antibiotics. Now-a-days Surgeons use
medicated stents to avoid any infection. Following the operation, the patient
is treated with heart medications such as blood thinners and to control the
blood pressure on a longer time bases and the patient is advised to change his
lifestyle that is, consume right food and drink as well as to do regular walk
in the fresh air.
Aortic
Aneurism: is the disease of the main artery supplying blood from the
heart to the lower abdomen. About 8 pints of blood every minute circulate
throughout the body. In this disease part of the artery may become weaker and
become balloon shaped and may even burst causing a sudden death. Secondly, it
may get blocked with plaque due to high level of cholesterol. An immediate
attention is required by the Surgeon.
Atherosclerosis: In this disease main arteries of the body
are affected with plaque. The disease can lead to coronary artery
disease.
Bradycardia: is the disease of the heart when the
heartbeat is much slower (below 50) than the average heart beat 0f 72 per
minute in a healthy person. The causes may relate to old-age, reduction in
electrical pulses and sometimes heart medication effects.
Cardiomyopathy: can be caused when there is damage to the
heart muscle. The heart muscle can become dilated and enlarged OR the
walls of the left ventricle become thickened due to high blood pressure.
Deep vein Thrombosis:
also known as blood clot. In
this disease a blood clot can block the passage of blood in the veins of the
legs or pelvic causing severe pain.
Embolism: A large object which is a fragment of a
clot can travel through the blood stream and can cause blockage in any part of
the body. If it travels to the brain it can cause stroke.
Endocarditis: is caused by infections and end up
with inflammation of the lining of the heart. The bacteria related to
streptococci and staphylococci group are the main causes of this disease. The
symptoms are low fever, back ache, night sweating, breathlessness and general
tiredness.
Gangrene: A lack of supply of blood to any part of
the body or a bacterial infection can cause gangrene. It is common in diabetic
patients as the wounds do not heal quickly due to abnormal sugar levels.
Tachycardia: is the disease of the heart when heart
starts beating faster than the normal. The heart can be seen fluttering on the
left side and the patient becomes anxious. There are several causes for
palpitation and faster rate of heart beating. The patient may be anaemic. A
lack of iron in the blood shows pale colour of the patient. Heart is in demand
for healthy blood and can start racing. It may occur in some young people who
are over indulged in sex. One can have a heart disease which would need
thorough investigation by a cardiologist before treatment can be
advised.
Two Evils: Cholesterol
and High blood pressure
Cholesterol is type of protein fat which
has high level in certain foods like red meat, dairy fat and sugar. Cholesterol
is produced during process of liver metabolism and excess
cholesterol travels through blood and blocks arteries over a period of time. It
can be a genetic problem as well. It is essential to
have cholesterol levels checked from early as of 35 years old.
High blood pressure
is becoming very common now –a-
days due to wrong food consumption and lack of
exercise. This is also one of the main causes of heart disease and stroke.
Modern life use of machinery, watch TV for long hours and eat process food has
caused this evil. When people consumed natural foods and did lot of manual work they had no BP issues. A regular check of BP
should be done if one has high readings of top reading over 140 and bottom
reading over 80.
What- ever is the cause
or type of heart disease the patient has, it is important to change the life style
that is make a routine to consume healthy food, stop alcohol and
smoking, do regular exercise and manage stress. Organic diseases of the heart
that need surgery
Must be attended by a
qualified Surgeon. Herbal or homeopathic medicines may be used as complementary
medicine with the consultation of one’s permanent Doctor.
There is a good remedy for heart illnesses in
homeopathy called Toni card. It contains cactus grandifloras,
cratagus, convallaria majalis, valerian, stophanthus and Au rum muriaticum. Which can be given
individually or combined according to the symptoms of the patient?
Chronic heart
disease: The disease becomes chronic when
patient does not take care of himself properly after the operation. It is
therefore very important to change lifestyle which can prevent the disease
become chronic.
Heart healthy tips:
Life style: Change of life style is the main factor to
consider by a heart patient. The very day life style is changed the favourable
results start showing.
The main food
and drink to avoid are alcohol, smoking,
red meat, fry foods and full fat dairy products.
The next item
is regular exercise. For a heart patient walking is the best option. One should
walk 20-30 minutes every in fresh air day before eating.
The third
thing is laughter.People who
watch comedian films, chat and laugh with friends and
relatives and be happy help improve their heart and brain health.
Light music:
is very relaxing and is part and parcel of life. Listening to the light music
during bedtime brings quick sleep and improve the immune system.

Causes of heart
disease: Heart disease can be caused by
wrong lifestyle that is by smoking, drinking alcohol, eating high fat food,
lack of exercise and with anxiety Or with combination of any of these elements.
Diagnoses: A blood
test is important to establish the levels of cholesterol, Triglycerides and
Homocysteine levels. A regular check of high blood pressure is also necessary
as it can put load on the heart.
Triglycerides are
fats in your blood, some fats are needed in your body although a high level can
cause risk for heart attack and stroke especially to people with diabetes.
Homocysteine: are
amino acids which result with eating too much meat. A high level of these can
become a risk factor for heart disease.
C - reactive
protein: is a protein which can cause
inflation in the arteries and arteries become hard causing high blood pressure
especially in the old-age people.
Regular use of fatty and fried foods like
Prantha with butter, Samosas, Pakoras, & Bacon etc. clog heart arteries and may bring heart
attack as early as to 40 years old.
Symptoms of Heart
attack: Chest pain which can extend to the back of shoulders and down to the
left arm, sweating on the forehead, breathlessness rapid pulse with high blood
pressure and feeling un-well calls for emergency.
One can take 3-4 tablets of 75mg aspirin and
chew them followed by a sip of water. So it is not a bad idea to keep aspirin
at home which is available on the counter of the pharmacist without
prescription. For people who have experienced chest pain before may keep in
their car. It is advisable to inform the A&E department on admission that
you have taken the aspirin and in what doze. This will avoid giving you further
doze of aspirin.
Glyceryl Trinitrate
Spray: available from pharmacists (or tablets) is very effective to subside
chest pain in emergency. Heart patient must carry this with him all the
time.
Warning: No medication
should be used without seeing the prescriber.
